All health organisations under the banner of the North West Shared Infrastructure Services (NWSIS) have agreed a collaborative work plan under four main themes: -

  • Interoperability

  • Mobile Working

  • Telehealth

  • Unified Communications

These themes are aimed at delivering an overall healthcare strategy.

Unified Communications

Key considerations within this strategy have been that successful delivery of healthcare is reliant upon a sustainable, resilient and reliable infrastructure that enables healthcare professionals to communicate effectively.

As the large players in the unified communications market develop their platforms the question of interoperability becomes fundamental.  We, in the NW SIS team, have worked with our internal specialist teams and the UC suppliers to provide a federated approach to unified communications.

A project which the NWSIS team have lead on over the last couple of years is providing federation between the Microsoft Lync/Skype for business platform and Cisco systems, Jabber Platform

We have proved Instant Messaging and presence between multiple organisations and multiple instances of these separate platforms and we are now working on federating video and voice services.

Negotiations have recently started with UC suppliers Polycom and Unify about federation into their platforms.
